Dear Prime Minister:

We and the five thousand delegates attending the World Peace Forum here in Vancouver are deeply concerned about a number of your government’s policies. Specifically, we believe your visits to Yasukuni Shrine are at the detriment of peaceful relations in East Asia and a breach of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Furthermore, your intention to weaken or abandon Article 9 of Japan’s constitution will represent a major step backwards for peace and reconciliation.

We, the undersigned, have taken part in six days of discussions aimed at ending war and building a peaceful, just and sustainable world. We will not rest until this is achieved and we strongly urge you to reverse the policies you have been pursuing. The war on terror has reinforced global militarism, raised the specter of nuclear holocaust, and led to a dangerous situation around the world.
