2009 PEACE AND RECONCILIATION STUDY TOUR IN CHINA FOR
TEACHERS, EDUCATORS, AND RESEARCHERS: June 30 - JULY 15, 2009

The Global Alliance for Preserving the History of World War II in Asia (Global Alliance) is
again pleased to announce, for the third year, that up to 20 social science, history, and
humanities teachers and educators are invited to apply for this opportunity to take part in a
16-day intensive summer study tour of China. The purpose of the study tour is to enhance
knowledge and understanding of the cultural and historical background of China during the
Asia-Pacific War from 1931-1945. The schedule includes lectures and discussion of the
history of Sino-Japanese relations, visits to museums and historical sites, meeting survivors
of wartime atrocities, and participation in briefing and reflection sessions. Cities visited
include Shanghai, Nanjing, Kunming/Baoshan (in Yunnan province), and other places of
historical interest (exact itinerary to be determined).
This intensive program concentrates on the legacy of the Asia-Pacific War and impact on
achieving peace and reconciliation in Asia. The issues of human rights, war crimes,
genocide, atrocities, historical injustice and redress, global citizenship, and individual
responsibility will be considered in the Asian context and in the broader scope of the 21st
century.

Preference will be given to applicants who aim to expand their knowledge of Asia and
incorporate East Asia history, social studies and literature in their teaching and research.
We will take into consideration the ability to adapt to new cultural settings, and the physical
and psychological demands of an intensive study and travel program. Participants will be
required to: First, complete a preliminary background reading assignments prior to the start
of the program; Second, attend all scheduled activities during the program, including
pre-tour discussion meetings and briefing sessions; and Third, after completing the study
tour, provide a trip report that reflects the tour experience, develop a lesson plan and/or
study guide from the experiences and materials gathered in the tour into an Internet
downloadable database.

EXPENSES: Sponsoring organizations will be responsible for land travel,
accommodations (double occupancy) and meals in China during the period of the study tour
(approximately $2,000 per participant). International air travel to and from China will be
the responsibility of the participants (approximately $1,200). Self-funded participants will
be responsible for the entire cost (approximately $3,200). Visitor’s visa fees, international
airport taxes, mandatory personal medical and accident insurance covering the period of the
tour are also the responsibility of the participants. A $200 deposit is required upon
acceptance into the program; the full amount will be refunded upon our receipt of the
reflection essay, proposed lesson plan or equivalent educational project. This may take the
form of a power point presentation for classroom use, lecture project, seminar program,
academic paper, or similar.

SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS: Program sponsors may be Global Alliance affiliate
organizations. The cost of the trip will be shared by the local sponsoring organization, the
Global Alliance, and the participant. In years past teachers and researchers from New
Jersey and Massachusetts; the cities of San Diego, San Francisco, Los Gatos, San Rafael,
Oakland, in California; and England participated with sponsorship from APHAFIC,
WW2AHS, APTSJW, ICMF, NJ-ALPHA and RNRC. * We look forward to more
participation from our member organizations in 2009. Proposed self-sponsored
participants must identify a qualifying academic institution or equivalent professional
affiliation.
