A new documentary film, called Nanking, was just accepted into the Sundance Film Festival . Produced by Ted Leonsis, and directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman. The film focuses on the Japanese invasion into Nanking in 1937 and 1938.

The film is based on collective testimony and eye witness accounts from the Chinrese survivors, Japanese soldiers and the brave westerners w ho banded together to save many lives. The film's focus is on how a group of westerners could work together and save 250,000 lives in the city of Nanking during bombing raids; invasion and occupation.

Nanking Film Accepted at Sundance

I am honored beyond words to tell everyone that my film called Nanking was accepted today into the Sundance Film Festival. Sundance reviewed more than 3,287 films and accepted 122 and we were fortunate to be placed into the Documentary Competition of the festival.

The Sundance Film Festival is the first film festival of the year running from January 18 - 28 in Park City, Utah. It has earned a reputation as the most serious and highest quality marketplace for independent film makers to mingle with one another and to show their films to people in the industry and the media. As it is a true directors forum as well, my sincerest congratulations to our directors Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman.

This film, as I have blogged about before was a true labor of love for me and the entire crew. I was motivated to tell the story of some very heroic westerners who saved the lives of approximately 250,000 Chinese during the rape of Nanking - to pay homage to their work - to put in memoriam the lives that were lost at Nanking and to pay tribute to Iris Chang, whose brave work authoring the book the Rape of Nanking needed to be recognized.

I am hopeful that this film also shows that all wars create their own levels of hell and that common men and women can rise up and band together to conduct incredible feats of kindness and heroics.

I also want to praise the great work of our cast, just to name a few: Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway, Jurgen Prochnow and Stephen Dorff.

I look forward to going to Sundance to experience the camaraderie of follow producers and directors and meeting people in the industry.

Ted's Take - The Making of Nanking the Film

The Making of Nanking the Film
I was asked via email how did we create a compelling film about a historical event that occurred in 1937 and 1938.

Our film is really about people, their acts of kindness and absolute courage. It is about brave westerners that stayed behind in China during wartime occupation and saved hundreds of thousands of people. Those eyewitnesses to the event wrote journals, diaries and letters that provided vivid detail of their experiences and were brought to life by a great cast of actors. The actual accounts of the westerners provided the narrative backbone to the film.

We used footage of home movies, personal photos and radio interviews with these brave souls to help flesh out the characters of the film.

We were able to locate dozens of the actual Nanking survivors throughout China and we filmed first-hand eyewitness accounts from these survivors and incorporated some of their thoughts in the film. When we go online and to DVD after the film is hopefully released theatrically, we will be able to show the hundreds of hours of testimonials to this historical event. We also filmed at actual locations referenced in the film to offer perspective of where they are today. My trip to China this past March, where I helped conduct these interviews certainly changed my life and my world view.

We also went to Japan to interview Japanese soldiers who were actually in Nanking from 1937 - 1938 and they shared their memory of the events that happened. We also filmed on location in Japan to provide further perspective and context for the film.

To further validate the context of our firm, we of course did research throughout the US, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan and found newsreel footage and photos and actually discovered film at the Library of Congress shot by one of the brave westerners chronicling the event and some of the atrocities from the occupation.

It is amazing how much information we found and how a talented crew and a great set of directors can take mountains of information and transform it into great art and compelling filmmaking.
